Adult pigeons

• After racing season is finished:
  It is absolutely essential that racing pigeons undergo a health check (by a veterinarian) in order to prevent infectious organisms picked up during the flying season from invading the flock, spreading and leading to an outbreak of clinical disease at times of stress (e.g. mating and exhibitions).
  The health check should take place as early as possible, so that any treatment can be carried out before the main moult, thereby avoiding damage to the plumage.
  
  
• During moulting:
  Moulting must be rapid and complete. Especially during the main moult, measures should be taken to support the pigeon's metabolism, accelerate moulting and promote the formation of new healthy feathers. To prevent deficiency problems, which can irreversibly impair the formation of new feathers, chevi-san, mycosan-t^CCS and miral are administered as follows during moulting:

The birds must be kept free from ectoparasites. This is achieved by means of regular control of ectoparasites with chevi-tren or ins 15 (see treatment plan Ectoparasites).

• On completion of moulting:
  Examination of individual birds by the veterinarian.
  Smears: Crop, cloaca, organ smears from a killed pigeon (where applicable).
  Examination of faecal samples: Collect droppings over a 3-day period, both in the morning and evening (5 days if chronic carriers are suspected).
  If disease is established, follow the treatment plan.
  Eliminate possible disease factors (improvement of loft conditions).
  
  
• 9 weeks before mating:
  Begin preventive treatment with chloramphenicol-N, followed by vaccination against salmonellosis with chevivac-S (see treatment and vaccination plan Salmonellosis for breeding and racing pigeons).
  
  
• 7 weeks before mating:
  In preparation for breeding, all of the pigeons in the flock undergo precautionary deworming with ascapilla^®+ (see treatment plan Worm infestation)
  
  
• 5 weeks before mating:
  Vaccination of adult birds against paramyxovirus infection with chevivac-P200 (see vaccination plan Paramyxovirosis). In risk areas where there is a need for protective vaccination against pigeon pox, it may be possible to carry this out at the same time. The vaccine manufacturer's instructions should be followed under these circumstances.
  
  
• From 2 weeks before mating until the squabs are grain-fed:
  To enhance the birds' readiness to mate and to support the health of the parent birds during rearing, chevi-san, vitin^® and miral are administered as follows:

• After laying:
  To protect the nestlings against infection, the parent birds should be given precautionary treatment against trichomonads with chevi-col^®+ (see treatment plan Trichomoniasis).
  
  
• Shortly before the flying season begins:
  Perform a health check on racing pigeons. In problem flocks with a high incidence of canker, treatment with chevi-col^®+ must be repeated (see treatment plan Trichomoniasis).
