Salmonellosis vaccination plan

The most effective way of protecting pigeons against salmonella infection is via active immunisation with chevivac-S.

• Timing of vaccination:
  All pigeons that appear healthy may be vaccinated. Do not vaccinate clinically ill pigeons and chronic carriers.
  Suitable times for vaccination are given below:
  

  Young pigeons:		only in case of infection (not before the 4th week of life) vaccination following a treatment against salmonellosis
  Adult pigeons:		around 8 weeks before mating vaccination following a treatment against salmonellosis
  Racing pigeons:		at least 3 weeks before the flying season
  Fancy pigeons:		at least 3 weeks before exhibitions

  
  All of the pigeons in the flock should be vaccinated. Unvaccinated pigeons are a possible source of infection.
  
  
• Vaccine:
  chevivac-S
  Dose: 0.5 ml per pigeon
  Application: strictly subcutaneous injection, administered dorsally in the neck in the direction of the tail, but not immediately behind the head.
  Full immunity is developed 2-3 weeks after vaccination.
  Duration of immunity: 12 months (maximum)
  
  
• Additional measures:
  The following measures ensure that vaccination is successful, thus safeguarding the health and performance of the pigeons:
  - birds to be kept under the correct conditions
  - the best possible diet to strengthen the condition
  - administration of livimun^® to boost the specific immune reaction
  - give the birds multivitamin EB12
  - protect the flock against the introduction of pathogens.
